Vacancies are changing regularly due to the movement of Volunteers, therefore if a role is filled at present, it is always possible to go on the waiting list. Please note that all our Volunteering Opportunities are available during office hours only (Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm).

Service: Advice & Assessment

Summary: This team provide practical and emotional support for young people who are vulnerable by exploring the range of options open to them. The advice and assessment worker runs a drop-in service and carries out follow up casework, as well as networking with other community groups. As a volunteer you will be an integral part of this service.

Here are some of the tasks you will be asked to do:

 

Assist the Advice & Assessment Officer to carry out referral work, such as making applications for accommodation, writing letters to HPUs or other external agencies.

 
 

Assist the young person in telephoning relevant external agencies, such as emergency and short term housing options to check vacancies.

 
 

Advise how to make a claim for benefits and direct the young person to the correct office. Assist to complete welfare benefit forms if needed.

 

Order identification (e.g. Birth Certificates & Medical Cards) for young people where necessary.

 

To complete appropriate meeting record forms and communicate outcomes of meeting.

 
 

Assist young people to complete their part of the longer term housing application forms and other paperwork.

 
 

Maintain information systems (i.e. Keep folders up to date, ensure all relevant referral forms are up-to-date and copies available).

 
 

Assist in inputting casework information onto a centralised computer system.

 
 

Assist in researching external services and requesting the relevant information/referral forms.

 
 

And eventually to:

 
 

Give advice to young people over the telephone and invite to attend drop-in.

 
 

Carry out initial assessments of young people during drop-in sessions, giving appropriate advice as a result and making appropriate referrals.

Summary: The Advocacy Service provides practical and emotional support for young people who are vulnerable by exploring the range of options open to them. It represents young people using all relevant legislation, with the Housing and Childrens Act as key tools. Volunteers would be assisting young people to have a voice and to understand their rights.

 
 


Some of the tasks this volunteer may be asked to do:

 

Make appropriate grant applications on behalf of young people and assist them in making such applications themselves in relevant circumstances.

 
 

Assist young people to complete relevant forms, follow through complaints procedures and undertake simple casework.

 
 

Maintain information systems (e.g. folders of up-to-date projects, signposting information and grant application forms); research and request information about specialist services to meet particular needs.

 
 

Assist the service in researching and updating a legal information library. To provide administrative support, draft, type and send out letters in the capacity of supporting Advocacy Officer.

 
 

Where appropriate accompany young people to interviews/assessments.

Schools Work Project Volunteer

Summary: The Family Mediation Service works with young people to open channels of communication with family members and to re-establish more positive contact. It also delivers preventative work with pupils in the Schools Work Project.

Some of the tasks this volunteer may be asked to do:

 
 

Co-facilitate group work with young people (schools/hostels/PRUs).

 

Conduct presentations to groups of young people and/or teachers to promote the Schools Work Project.

 

Conduct presentations to external agencies to promote the Schools Work Project.

 

Research development ideas and and put together material for group and classroom work.

 
 

To help with the planning, administration, organisation and evaluation of group work and follow-up work with young people involved in the project.

Summary: This team ensures that the valuable lessons learnt within our frontline services are harnessed to influence public policy and practice as it relates to vulnerable young people. Within this team the Supportive Relations project provides information, advice, training, consultancy and networking opportunities for related projects across the UK.

Some of the tasks this volunteer may be asked to do:

 

Provide administrative and research support for current projects as identified by the Development Coordinators.

 
 

Support the design and preparation of material for training, focus groups, workshops and networking events, and attend where appropriate

 
 

Research, analyse, interpret and summarise relevant policy literature and evidence for internal briefings to inform the development of our services.

 
 

Assist the development of Alone in London's public policy work, aiming to influence policy makers, legislators, opinion-formers and wider audiences.

Library & Job Brokerage Volunteer

Summary: The Training and Employment Service offers advice, support and training to enable young people to achieve personal and career progression. As an integral part of this team, there are two parts to this role:
a) to develop a library of information for this project through a variety of research methods;
b) to contact local businesses across a variety of industry sectors to establish a relationship in which Alone in London can act as a job broker between them and the young people we work with.

Some of the tasks this volunteer may be asked to do:

 
 

Build up a library of information, e.g. course prospectuses, training opportunities, etc.

 
 

Resource community information e.g. after school clubs, sport, art, drama clubs etc.

 
 

Research training and employment resources on the internet.

 

Research training techniques and methods.

 
 

Set this information up as a comprehensive library at 188 King's Cross Road.

 
 

Identify local businesses across a broad range of industries and sectors.

 
 

Contact appropriate individuals within those companies to arrange meetings.

 
 

Attend arranged meetings along with the Training & Employment Coordinator, to negotiate a working relationship in which Alone in London has early notice of job vacancies and is able to directly apply for roles on behalf of young people worked with.

Summary: The Fundraising Team raise all our money from non-statutory sources; Trusts, Corporate Bodies, Event & Individuals. Enabling our project to survive and grow.

Some of the tasks this volunteer may be asked to do:

 
 

Undertake research into the charitable giving policy of current and new trust funders of Alone in London, and identify new trusts who’s guidelines we fit.

 
 

Assist the Trust Fundraising Officer with written correspondence to charitable trusts and foundations.

 
 

Research and compile information, statistics and case studies which will help Alone in London’s fundraising.

 
 

Assist the Trust Fundraising Officer in keeping records of all our fundraising appeals, and keeping a work plan of future appeals and to assist in administration and database update.
